Becoming a Medical TranscriptionistPage 1 Page 2 Page 3 FAQ To become a medical transcriptionist, you need to receive an education about the business of medical transcription, medical terminology, procedures and necessary information. It is recommended that you take an MT course offered by a respected school for your education. Before getting started with a course, you will need some important materials, including a medical dictionary.
But more on that below. First here is a summary of the skills you should already have before taking a course.
Typing skills. You should be able to type at least 40 to 70 words per minute (WPM) English editing skills Reading and listening skills Ability to work alone without supervision Good computer skills Experience with word processing software (ie. MS Word) is an asset. If you have the skills listed above, you already have what it takes to be a medical transcriptionist. But before landing a job, you must first become familiar with medical vocabulary and formats. Learning this material will typically take 300 to 400 hours of course study, which is usually done over a 6 month period. However, many courses allow you to work at your own pace, so you can complete all the material whenever you want. There are many courses to chose from, which will be covered in the next section. Equipment NeededMedical transcriptionists use a computer and what is called a transcription machine. The computer does not have to be an expensive state of the art system, as even old 486 machines will do. Though a PC is most often used, a Mac can also be used for the job. Word Perfect and Microsoft Word are two of the most popular software programs used by transcriptionists, though some will use additional software. Along with a computer and software, a printer is needed. A transcription machine is similar to an old-fashioned tape recorder and is very easy to use. Unlike the old tape recorders, transcription machines include a headset and foot pedal. The headset helps block outside noises, and helps with the overall clarity of the tapes while listening. The foot pedal is very important because it allows the transcriptionist to start, stop, and rewind the tape while still keeping both hands on the keyboard. This saves a lot of time while transcribing. Cost of Medical Transcription EducationAs mentioned above, there is a large range of courses for a range of different prices. But a good size course will typically start at about $700 with additional pricing for additional course content. For example, some courses will provide extra books or practice tapes for a higher tuition fee. While this is optional, keep in mind that the more material you study with, the more qualified you will be at the end of the course. It is important to find a course that not only offers you the necessary course content and equipment, but also provides medical books for reference. The world of medicine is very large, and the more material you know, the better chance you will have at finding a good paying job.
